Recommended: Pentium processor 16 MB RAM Quad Speed CD-ROM drive One or two joysticks Sound Blaster or 100% Sound Blaster compatible sound card. What is Virtual Memory? Virtual memory is a method that uses disk space to supplement your machine's RAM. When Football Pro `97 is running, it creates a file on your hard drive (known as a swap file) which is used to store information when there is not enough available RAM. The size of the swap file is equal to the virtual memory requirement (12 MB) minus the amount of available RAM. Systems with more RAM will have smaller swap files created. The swap file is deleted automatically when you quit Football Pro `97. Due to the swap file requirements of Windows 95, you will need at least 30 MB of free disk space on the drive where your swap file resides, or Football Pro '97 will get errors allocating memory. Installation Path Football Pro '97 MUST be installed in a directory named \SIERRA\FBPRO97 for all features to function properly. It is not important on which physical drive (C,D etc.) it is installed, but it MUST be installed off the drive's root directory in \SIERRA\FBPRO97. Examples: C:\SIERRA\FBPRO97 (good) D:\SIERRA\FBPRO97 (good) C:\FBPRO97 (bad) C:\FOOTBALL (bad) C:\GAMES\SIERRA\FBPRO97 (bad) Should you install Football Pro '97 to a directory other than \SIERRA\FOOTBALL you may have problems when using custom data (game plans, plays, profiles, etc.) or when playing multiplayer games. In addition, Football Pro '97 cannot use game plans that include plays saved to floppy disks, or stored in the EXTRA directory on the CD. These plays should be kept in the \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM directory. To use the plays in the EXTRA directory, copy the plays you want into your \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM directory. With Win95 Explorer, select these files and right click to bring up the short menu. Pick "Properties" and toggle the "read only" file attribute box to the off setting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B WINDOWS 95 COMPATIBILITY Installing the game to your hard drive Football Pro `97 supports the Windows 95 Autoplay feature. Follow these steps to install and run the game under Windows 95: 1) Start Windows 95. 2) Insert the Football Pro `97 CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3) If the game has not yet been installed, you will be asked if you wish to install it. To proceed with the installation, click "Yes". 4) Follow the on-screen directions to complete the installation process. Note: If Autoplay has been disabled on your system you will need to double click on the CD-ROM icon in your MY COMPUTER folder. Running The Game Football Pro `97 is designed to start automatically when you insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive. When you insert the CD, you will be asked if you want to start the game; click on "yes" to run the game. Note: If Autoplay has been disabled on your system you will need to double click on the CD-ROM icon in your MY COMPUTER folder. You may also start the game by selecting it from your Start Menu under the SIERRA group. If you wish to launch the game using some of the optional command line parameters, create a shortcut for HIKE.BAT and edit the properties to include the options you want. See page 10 of the manual and "Additional Command Line Options" below for a listing of the available command line options. Screen Savers Some screen saver programs may interrupt Football Pro `97 and prevent it from continuing afterwards. We HIGHLY recommend that you do NOT use any screen saver programs while playing Football Pro `97. This includes the Windows 95 screen savers. Ejecting The CD-ROM While Playing Do NOT eject the CD-ROM while Football Pro `97 is running. Information on the CD-ROM is required during game play. If the game needs a file from the CD-ROM and the CD is not present in the drive, the game may experience lockups or other undesirable behavior. Task Swapping We recommend that you quit all other applications prior to running Football Pro `97, or you may experience game lock-ups or other problems. When Windows 95 is focused on Football Pro '97, it will not allow sounds for other applications to play. Football Pro '97 will perform best if no other applications are open in Windows 95. Removing The Game From Your Hard Drive To remove the game from your hard drive, open the Sierra folder in the Windows 95 Start Menu, Select "Setup & Uninstall". This will start the Sierra Setup program that will allow you to uninstall any Sierra product. Select Uninstall from the main menu. Choose FPS: Football Pro '97 from the list. All of the original Football Pro `97 program files will be removed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- C MULTIPLAYER GAMES You may play Football Pro '97 as a multiplayer game via modem or network in Coaching-only or Full-arcade mode. Modem Connection Problems: If you experience file block errors while transferring team data during a modem game, one possible solution is to adjust your transmit and receive buffers to their lowest settings. This may help in stabilizing the transfer of the data, but will slightly increase the file transfer time in modem. To change the buffer settings go to the control panel and click on Modems. From the Modems Properties window click on the Properties button. This will bring up a Properties window specific to your installed modem. Next select the Connection tab. You should now see a Port Settings button; click on it to bring up the window to change your transmit and receive buffers. Slide both sliders to their lowest values (which will be '1' in both cases), and then click on OK. Using Custom Data To Play Multiplayer Games You may use custom plays, game plans, profiles and leagues for multiplayer games. If your opponent does not currently have an exact copy of the files that you wish to use for a multiplayer game, the files will be transferred at the beginning of the game. This process may take several minutes to complete depending on the number and sizes of the files. Setting Game Options For Multiplayer Games In order to set custom game options for multiplayer games, start a single player exhibition game, bring up the game settings screen and set the desired options for your multiplayer game. Once you have set the options, exit the single player game and start the multiplayer game. Note: Game options for multiplayer games will be taken from the users machine who creates the game. Remote League Multiplayer Games Remote games can now be played as multiplayer games. To play a remote multiplayer game, start the remote game as normal using the HIKE -XP command line option or click on the icon in the start menu. Once into the game you will see the normal multiplayer game dialogue pop up. Choose the type of multiplayer game you wish to play and proceed as a normal multiplayer game. Calling Plays in Multiplayer Games Some users may have problems calling plays on the playcalling screen in multiplayer games. Double-clicking to select a play may not work correctly for some users playing by modem. If this occurs, you may call plays by clicking on the desired play, then clicking the "Ready-Break!" button. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- D TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting Corrupt League Files It is important that you NEVER shut down or restart the computer while the game is running; always exit the game before shutting down your system. If the computer is shut off during simulations or statistics updating, you could induce errors on your hard drive and/or corrupt the active league files. If the league files become corrupted, you will need to either start a new league or restore a previous backup of the league. If you notice that some of the statistics in your roster or player files are incorrect, it is possible that some game files have become corrupted. To verify this is the case, run CHKDSK at your MS-DOS prompt. If errors are detected on the hard drive, they will be reported as the first line immediately after the "Volume Serial Number" statement. If you have errors, you will need to correct them. To do this, you can use the CHKDSK /F command, SCANDISK, or any other hard disk maintenance utility such as Norton Utilities or PC-Tools. WARNING -- there is a slight chance that you may lose data from the hard drive when attempting to correct any errors. The chance of data loss depends upon the severity of the errors on the drive. Consult your MS-DOS or hard drive maintenance utility documentation for more information. We highly recommend you make a back-up of your hard drive, and/or back-up any important information or documents before attempting to correct hard drive errors. NOTE ABOUT HARD DRIVE ERRORS - Lost allocation units or other hard drive problems can result from a number of reasons. Power spikes or surges that make their way to the hard drive when it is attempting to read or write is one cause. You can also receive them when turning off the computer during a time when the hard drive is active. It is important that you check your hard drive regularly for errors, and you use the league back-up utilities provided with Front Page Sports: Football Pro '97 on a regular basis. CD-ROM Troubleshooting If you are experiencing "CDR-101 Read errors" or are experiencing random lock-ups, then make sure you are using the latest CD-ROM drivers and the correct version of MSCDEX.EXE for your revision of MS-DOS. To verify that you are using the correct device drivers in your CONFIG.SYS file, contact your CD-ROM drive manufacturer. To verify that you are using the latest version of MSCDEX.EXE, please examine the chart below: MS-DOS 5.0 Users....................Use MSCDEX 2.21 or above MS-DOS 6.0 Users....................Use MSCDEX 2.22 or above MS-DOS 6.20-6.22 Users..............Use MSCDEX 2.23 or above Windows 95. ........................Use MSCDEX 2.95 or above NOTE - MSCDEX 2.22 is included with MS-DOS 6.0, and MSCDEX 2.23 is included with MS-DOS 6.20-6.22. To update from an older version of MSCDEX, simply copy the updated file from the DOS directory into the directory where you are loading MSCDEX. For more information, please refer to your CD-ROM hardware manual or contact your CD-ROM drive manufacturer. SCSI Drivers If your system is equipped with a SCSI hard drive, you will need to make sure that you are loading the appropriate SCSI driver in your CONFIG.SYS file. For additional information or instructions on how to accomplish this task, please refer to your hard drive or SCSI controller documentation or manufacturer. Problems with Movies (AVIs) Some users may see vertical black and white lines and a message "Video not available" when the program tries to play movies (AVIs). This indicates that the Windows95 Media Player is not properly installed. (This player is normally installed with Windows 95, but you may have chosen not to install it to save disk space.) This does not affect game play, but you may correct the problem by installing the Media Player from your Windows 95 disks. (For information on installing Windows 95 components, consult your Windows 95 documentation.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- E Remote Leagues Here are some tips and guidelines for being the Commissioner of a Football Pro '97 remote league. Creating the League At the beginning of a new remote league, the league commissioner should provide all team owners with the league files. (For a list of league files, see below.) These files must be copied into the same directory on each owner's hard drive. We recommend that this sub- directory be located within the \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM directory, for example: Your office league might keep all league files in a directory named \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM\MYOFFICE. Each time owners receive a new set of league files, they should delete all previous files from this specific league before copying in the new set. League Files There are nine different league files that may exist at varying times during the season. These files will all have the same filename, but with different three-character extensions. For example, a league named MYOFFICE might have the following league files: MYOFFICE.LGE MYOFFICE.LGC MYOFFICE.PYF MYOFFICE.PYC MYOFFICE.RST MYOFFICE.DFT MYOFFICE.TMN MYOFFICE.TRN MYOFFICE.PYR Using the League To use the remote league once the league files have been copied to the directory, you MUST change the settings for QuickStart so that the default league is the remote league. The various remote league shortcuts (and command line options; see below) will not work properly if this is not done. Command Line Options In addition to the shortcuts described in the manual (pages 196- 199), you may also use these commands (from the command line) with remote leagues: Command Effect HIKE -XC Starts Football Pro '97 as a remote commissioner; creates the GAMExxyy.IN files. HIKE -XP Starts Football Pro '97 as a remote player; saves GAMExxyy.OUT files when the game is finished. HIKE -XC -UP Starts Football Pro '97 as a remote commissioner; processes the GAMExxyy.OUT files to update the league. Remember: before playing a remote player game, make sure to back up any saved game (GAME.*) files, then delete them from the FBPRO97 directory. A Sample League Schedule The league commissioner should set up a regular schedule for playing games, receiving league uploads, roster moves, etc. Here is a sample schedule: Monday, noon. The league commissioner uploads league files containing the results of the previous week's games. The team owners should download these files so they can see results and make any necessary roster moves. Tuesday, noon. This is the deadline for all team owners to notify the commissioner of roster moves, trades, free agent selections, etc. These notifications are done by e-mail, and the commissioner implements them on his master copy of the league. Wednesday, midnight. This is the deadline for all team owners whose teams are on the road this week to upload their custom game plans, plays, and profiles for their upcoming game. (The games in this league are played by the team owners who are at home.) Thursday, noon. The league commissioner uploads new league files containing all of the roster moves, etc., as well as all GAMExxyy.IN files for the current week. Sunday, noon. Deadline for all home teams to upload the GAMExxyy.OUT file to the Commissioner. The Commissioner will simulate all games for which he has not received GAMExxyy.OUT files. Using Custom Game Plans, Plays, and Profiles When a team owner receives custom game plans, plays, or profiles from his opponent for this week's game, these files need to be placed in the same directory on the team owner's hard drive as they were in on his opponent's drive. Some leagues require all players to create a sub-directory for each team in their league directory. For example, the path for San Francisco in your office league might be: \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM\MYOFFICE\SF. The San Francisco team owner would keep his custom files in this directory, and his opponents during the season would copy any files he gave them into this directory prior to their games. Between Seasons You may, of course, proceed with the College Draft, Supplemental Draft, and Training Camp with any "house rules" you devise. We recommend you use one of these two methods of resolving the draft. 1. Require your players to get together for your draft. This may be in person or online (for example, in a chat room on America Online, or via Internet Relay Chat). This is the best method for a draft, because it is fun and allows the most flexibility for your players. You may also allow them to negotiate informal trades of draft picks. 2. Require your players to submit prioritized lists of players to be drafted, either for the entire draft or for each round. This method requires more organization, but may be best for leagues with team owners who are widely separated geographically. It can be much more economical than spending a few hours of connect time, and it is much easier than trying to find a good time for a large number of team owners to get together. For Training Camp, the most practical method is for the team owners to submit lists of training time allocations for the league commissioner to enter and resolve. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- F MISCELLANEOUS Deleting the TAPES Directory To lower the amount of hard drive space required to simulate a game, you can delete the TAPES directory from the FBPRO97 directory. Doing so will prevent any tapes or highlights from being captured and saved to the hard drive. You will not be able to view any highlights if you delete the TAPES directory. Additional Command Line Options Option Effect -l Save a log of all play-by-play information. A weeks worth of games will be appended to a single file if you are simulating league games. The PLAY.LOG file will be deleted at the start of a new weeks worth of games. -f Print all output to a text file called PRINT.OUT. You can view the file with any ASCII text editor. See Page 10 of the Football Pro `97 manual for more information on command line options. Player Awards and Hall of Fame: AWARDS.INI We have included an AWARDS.INI file with comments to allow you to tailor your awards to fit your tastes. Animation and Sound Settings: SETUP.INI In the SETUP.INI file there are values to allow you to set the graphics and sound details to better fit your system. The Setup program will analyze your system during the installation process and set the values in SETUP.INI to best fit your system. You can edit the SETUP.INI file to override the values that setup has selected for your system. Reducing the animations from 16 to 8 angles will reduce the amount of time required to load the animation graphics in at the start of a game. Reducing the sounds from 22 to 11 will also reduce the amount of time it will take to preload the sounds. Settings in the [ARCADE] section: Animations = 16 will set the animation angles to 16 rotations. It is recommended that you use this option only if your system has 16 or more megabytes of RAM. Animations = 8 will set the animation angles to 8 rotations. This will be the default setting for your system if you have less than 16 megabytes of RAM. Sounds = 22 will set the sounds used in the on field action to 22Kz stereo. It is recommended that you use this option only if you system has 16 or more megabytes of RAM. Sounds = 11 will set the sounds used in the on field action to 11Kz stereo. This is the default setting for systems with less than 16 megabytes of RAM. Settings in the [SHELL] section: Sound = on will turn music on for those portions of the game outside of the simulation. This is the default setting. Sound = off will turn music off for those portions of the game outside of the simulation. In the Instant Replay/VCR mode, the '-' (minus) key will toggle the display of the starting/ending information box on and off. This allows you to remove the box and see the starting and ending frames of the highlight. Player Ratings Profile Editor On page 154 in the manual, there is a description of the Select Group and Rating Category dialog box which indicates that you can view and edit players' potential ratings. This option is not available. Tutorial Errata There are two minor errors in the Tutorials described in the game manual. In Tutorial 9: Editing a Game Plan on pages 35-36, step 9 (and the accompanying screen shot) indicates that the first play slot is labeled "1-1 DBLWRS30". This play is actually labeled "1-1 29STREACH" in the game. Step 9 should read: "9. Click on the first play slot, labeled 1-1 29STREACH, to open the Load Play dialog box." In Tutorial 10: Customizing a Coaching Profile on pages 37-40, the last paragraph of step 3 and steps 4 and 5 refer to the general Play Type "GOAL LINE PASS" when they should say "GOAL LINE RUN". These paragraphs should read as follows: "In this tutorial, we will be substituting a specific play for the GOAL LINE RUN Play Type. You could also substitute specific plays for the other two Play Types. The plays you substitute do not have to match the default Play Types. "4. Highlight the top text box underneath the Selected Play heading. The box should read GOAL LINE RUN. "5. Move the pointer up to diagram box 1-1 and left click. The play named SLICE2RT should now appear in the text box. You have just replaced the general Play Type GOAL LINE RUN with the specific play SLICE2RT." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- G Version 1.1 update notes The following items are new to the 1.1 version release: - Full Screen Arcade play The arcade can now be set to run in full screen mode. When full screen mode is enabled the game will automatically stretch the onfield display to fit the current windows resolution. In higher resolutions (1024x768 and up) you may experience some loss in game performance. Higher color settings (more than 256) will also negatively impact game performance. We recommend that you set windows to 256 color mode prior to playing Football Pro '97. To enable full screen mode edit the setup.ini file found in SIERRA\FBPRO97 to include the following line: Screen=Full Note: The SETUP.INI file is case sensitive so you MUST type the line in exactly as it is shown above. - Dual Joysticks in a head-to-head game You should now be able to play head to head games using two joysticks on a single computer. - CD roms greater than H: Small install will now read the CD properly when the CD-Rom drive letter is set to letters greater than H: - Non-black rain The "acid" rain problem has been fixed. The rain drops will now appear as transparent instead of black. - Selected play highlighted unless in head-to-head play On the play call screen when you click on a play diagram with either the mouse or the joystick, a highlight box will appear around that play. However, this only occurs in single player games. The highlight will NOT appear when two players are playing a game on a single machine. - Pro Bowl conference AFC/NFC switches Pro Bowl teams will now have the correct players on each conference. - Move the mouse pointer out of the way during a play The mouse pointer will automatically be moved out of the way when exiting from the play call screen to the on field view. - Printing of Pro Bowl rosters You can now print Pro Bowl rosters. - Default Dynamix league data fix (now is a 30 team league) There was a data error in the Dynamix league that prevented you from being able to play games with two of the teams. The data problem has been fixed. - Printing of Hall of Fame and Awards Hall of Fame and Awards screens can now be printed. - Pro Bowl team colors fixed During Pro Bowl games, the team colors were incorrect. The team colors are now fixed. - Proper display of QB passing yards greater than 32000 Quarterbacks with passing yards greater than 32000 were appearing to lose yards as their careers progressed. This problem has been addressed. - Hard to read statistics and roster screens On statistics and roster screens the background color was too bright to read the text easily. The background color has been changed from light blue to a dark blue. - Left/Right arrows adding garbage characters when editing No garbage characters are added while using the arrow keys to edit. - Too difficult to call plays with double click. Should be easier to double click to select plays from the play call screen. - Fixed problem with trading the last player in the list There was a problem when trading the last player in a list. The problem has been fixed. - New League not retaining Uni # Colors/plans/profiles There was a problem when creating new leagues from existing leagues, the team data for jersey colors, game plans and coaching profiles was not being transferred over to the new league. This problem has been fixed. - MultiPlayer file transfer progress bar A status bar will now appear when starting multiplayer games over a modem or network. The status bar will show file transfer progress. - Printing problems in the Play Editor Some printers were having problems printing play diagrams. You should now have no difficulties printing play diagrams or coaching profiles. - Annoying single click game plan problem in Play Editor A double click is now required on a game plan mini diagram to bring up the load play window. This should make game plan and coaching profile creation easier. - Quick plan creation with subdirectories You should now be able to use the Quick Plan feature to create game plans with custom plays in subdirectories below the custom directory. - Changing field goal range in coaching profile not saving You can now edit and successfully save the field goal range in coaching profiles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- H Version 1.3 update notes (Version 1.2 was a beta of version 1.3) - SIGS gameplay improved SIGS games now run much faster, including the initial file transfers when starting a game. - SIGS Chat window enabled The SIGS chat window will be used for SIGS games. Any other multiplayer game will use the Multiplayer Chat window. - Local Network Mode If Local Network is checked, the game clock speed is adjusted to allow play over a Local Area Network. If you are using a network connection mode (TCP or IPX) to play over a Wide Area Network (The Internet) turn the Local Network option off. If you plan on playing Football Pro '97 over KALI using a modem, make sure to turn Local Network Mode off. If you are playing a multi player game and the clock is running too fast turn Local Network off. - Modem play improved Several improvements have been made to make modem head to head games smoother. - Multiplayer Chat lockups resolved In certain situations it was possible to cause the game to lock by using chat. Multiplayer chat should no longer produce any game lockups. - Player Trades sorted by Best to Worst Trade proposals are now sorted in order from best to worst in descending order. The best trade proposals will appear at the top of the list. - Play Editor rubber band mode while drawing Routes & Move to commands When you are drawing paths for players in the Play Editor, a single "rubber band" line will now be drawn from the last point to the current mouse position. - Clock stops when the kicking team recovers an onside kick Previously when the kicking team would recover the ball on an onside attempt the game clock would continue to run. Since this is actually a change of possession the clock will now stop. - Player of the week awards computed after last game of the week In certain situations the player of the week awards would be computed prior to the last game of of a week being completed. This problem has been addressed, now player of the week awards will not be computed until the last game in a week has been played. - Joystick\Keyboard input improved The Joystick\Keyboard inputs now work exactly the way that they did in Football Pro '96. Double click speeds have also been improved. - Substitution sets fixed You can now successfully create and use substitution sets in the Play Editor and the Arcade. - Substitution page fault fixed Occasionally the game would page fualt during player substitutions. This should no longer occur during substitutions. - Game is automatically saved after each play The game saves automatically after every play. This should allow you to start games at exactly the point you left off in the event of an unexpected exit. - CDrom drives with drive letters greater than P The game will now function properly with CDrom drive letters greater than P. - Correct field types for stadiums Stadium and field conditions should now properly match the stadium type for the home team. - Fixed display of negative yards Negative yardage for some statistical categories was displaying incorrectly. Numbers that should have appeared as "-???" were displaying as 6553?? numbers. The yardage for all statistics will now display correctly. This was a display problem only, no statistics were permanently effected. - Fixed jersey switch problem On two animations the player jersey colors would sometimes swap. This will no longer occur. - Manual Addendum about Roster Sorting On Page 176 of the printed FBpro 97 manual it states: "To see the players in the roster ranked by a rating or ratings, just click on the rating(s) and click SORT ROSTER." There was some confustion about how the computer was sorting the roster when no ratings were highlighted. If you click on the SORT ROSTER button WITHOUT highlighting a rating(s) the computer will sort the players based on their overall "value."
